In MACRA Final Rule, Health IT’s Role Looms Large
With the release of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) final rule, healthcare leaders quickly turned to look at the regulation’s many provisions that directly relate to the use of certified electronic health record (EHR) technology and more broadly, health information technology.

A Path Toward an Interoperable Health Record
The HIMSS Interoperability & Health Information Exchange (I&HIE) Committee convened a specialized Work Group that consisted of industry thought leaders, vendor representatives and subject matter experts to review the Draft 2017 ISA and formulate comments to the ONC before the Final 2017 ISA is issued in December 2016. The HIMSS Interoperability Standards Advisory Work Group met over eight weeks to consider the three interoperability areas, and prepare feedback with detailed comments to ONC that culminated in a response submitted on Oct. 23.

HHS Announces a Call to Action to Create a 21st Century Public Health Infrastructure
On October 19, Karen B. DeSalvo, MD, MPH, HHS assistant secretary for health, unveiled Public Health 3.0, a new model for building healthier communities across America. Public Health 3.0 recognizes that America has made great strides in recent years to expand access to medical care and preventive services, but that these successes have not guaranteed health equity for all.

Highlights: Supporting the Reliability and Safety of Certified Health IT through an ONC Direct Review Process
On Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released the ONC Health IT Certification Program: Enhanced Oversight and Accountability Final Rule. This is a key part of the ONC’s commitment to accelerate the interoperable flow of electronic health information by supporting the reliable and safe use of certified health information technology (health IT).
